The Tragic Tale of Ram Chander — How Corruption Turned into a Deadly Disease

In one of the most striking anecdotes in his writings, Dr. Baba Steve Bedi narrates a real encounter that captures the destructive power of corruption.

During a visit to New Delhi in October 2015, Dr. Bedi met a lawyer named Ram Chander, who proudly admitted to earning ₹20 crore (about $3.6 million) through bribes and manipulation of court verdicts. Ram boasted of bribing judges and defending white-collar criminals, including politicians and corporate executives. To him, guilt or innocence didn’t matter—only money did.

Dr. Bedi warned him gently, saying, “You are losing more than you are gaining. You’re losing your health, your peace, and your soul.”
But Ram laughed it off.

Physically, Ram was already deteriorating. He was 50 years old, overweight, diabetic, and suffered from high blood pressure and angina pain. He smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, drank regularly, and ate heavy meals rich in salt and fat. Despite being surrounded by luxury—servants, a beautiful wife, five children—his inner world was empty.

Soon, temptation took another turn. Ram began an affair with a 20-year-old paralegal named Carmen, drawn by her youth and charm. Their relationship became secretive, passionate, and reckless. One day, while attending a legal conference in Goa, Ram took Carmen to his hotel room. During a moment of intimacy, there was a sudden knock at the door. Ram panicked—and collapsed with a massive heart attack.

He died instantly.

Dr. Bedi calls Ram’s death “the perfect example of conditioned unconsciousness leading to biological collapse.” He explains that chronic stress, fueled by greed, corruption, and guilt, releases harmful hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which destroy the body’s organs and immune system. “In the end,” Bedi writes, “Ram killed himself—not with a weapon, but with his lifestyle.”
